History

History, from farming village to modern town.

Our history

Auderghem study

Georges Huygens

1913

It was in 1913 that the first notary's office was set up in the Commune of Auderghem, then an agricultural village with a population of 8,000.

Georges Huygens set up his practice in the Résidence "Les Hirondelles" on the Boulevard du Souverain, opposite the Château de Val Duchesse.

In parallel with his career as a notary, Georges Huygens became involved in politics, successively becoming Chairman of the Auderghem Public Assistance Commission (now CPAS), local councillor and alderman.

In recognition of his work, a street in Auderghem now bears his name.

Pierre Garde

1948

Maître Huygens handed over his practice to his grandson, Pierre Garde, in 1948. Notaire Garde received his first deed less than a month before his grandfather's death on 8 February 1949.

Notaire Garde accompanied the growing urbanisation of Auderghem. In the 1960s, he had the building that now houses the firm built to make it his permanent home.

He practised as a notary until his death on 13 December 1983.

Olivier Verstraete

1984

After a 6-month holiday, the firm was taken over by Olivier Verstraete in 1984. The firm thus passed from one family to another, with continuity of service.

Notary Olivier Verstraete has practised as a notary for more than thirty years, and has developed the firm considerably to meet the needs of modern society: more staff, computerisation, larger offices, etc.

Renaud Verstraete

2010

In 2010, Olivier Versraete made a successful partnership with his son Renaud Verstraete, before retiring in November 2016.

Notary Renaud Verstraete has endeavoured to continue the modernisation of the practice by completely renovating the offices and infrastructure.

Alexis Cruysmans

2018

In order to best support the evolution of the study, Renaud Verstraete joined forces with Alexis Cruysmans in May 2018, after six years of collaboration.

Together, they have worked on the digital development of the firm, enabling it to make the transition to a digital environment, enhancing the quality of service and flexibility offered to customers and staff alike.

Watermael-Boitsfort study

Edouard Behets - Wydemans

1912

At the end of 1912, the first study of Watermael-Boitsfort was created, fifty years after the hamlet of Auderghem became a separate municipality from its neighbour.

At the time, Watermael-Boitsfort was a rural municipality with a population of around 10,000, still focused on farming and exploiting the Forêt de Soignes.

Edouard Behets-Wydemans moved to the town and had a building constructed on Avenue Alfred Solvay 5, where he practised as a notary and also lived with his family. The building stood opposite the Church of Saint-Hubert, which was still under construction at the time, in the rapidly expanding Wiener district.

Eugène Behets - Wydemans

1951

In 1951, Eugène Behets - Wydemans succeeded his father, Edouard Behets - Wydemans.

He took over the notary's office and continued to develop it, in parallel with the growing urbanisation of Watermael-Boitsfort.

He stayed on to work and live with his family in the building his father had built on avenue Alfred Solvay 5.

He was also heavily involved in local life, notably as an alderman and chairman of the CPAS.

His own son, Yves Behets-Wydemans, was also a notary in another Brussels office.

Study by Luc van d Velde

Luc Van De Velde

1975

After sixty-three years in the hands of the Behets-Wydemans family, the firm was taken over by Notary Luc Van de Velde in 1975.

He stayed on to work for several years in the building on avenue Alfred Solvay 5. The building still exists today.

Although Watermael-Boitsfort had by then become a predominantly residential area, it was able to resist over-densification thanks to a policy aimed at preserving its green surroundings.

Study by Christiaan-de Grave

Christiaan De Grave

1989

Mr Christiaan De grave, from a family of notaries from Lo-Reninge in West Flanders, succeeded Notaire Van de Velde in 1989.

He moved the office to a small modernist house on rue Major Nicolas-Rémy 12, a few hundred metres from the historic building, still in the Wiener district.

He was also politically active within the CVP.

He handed in his study ten years later.

Philippe DAEMS

2000

At the beginning of 2000, after two relatively short periods of office, the firm was taken over by Notary Philippe Daems.

Philippe Daems worked hard to get the firm back on its feet in the early years. He then took charge of its development, while maintaining a family and local character, based on listening and availability. He also lived in the commune with his family.

He first moved the office near Place Keym, to a large building on Avenue du Martin Pêcheur 19-21. He then moved back to the Wiener district, rue Willy Coppens 5, opposite the Eglise Saint-Hubert.

He remained in office until his unexpected death in early 2024.

THE NOTILIUS STUDY

Jérôme du Bus de Warnaffe

2024

In April 2024, notaries Alexis Cruysmans and Renaud Verstraete welcomed a third notary, Jérôme du Bus de Warnaffe, and the firm became "Notilius".

The arrival of a third notary has enabled us to continue to guarantee a continuous high-quality service and greater availability for all our clients.

Resumption of the Daems study

2025

After deputising for Maître Philippe Daems for several months, Alexis Cruysmans was appointed titular notary of the Watermael-Boitsfort office in April 2025.

In order to ensure the continuity of the notarial service in the two structures and to benefit from constructive synergies, the notaries Renaud Verstraete, Alexis Cruysmans and Jérôme du Bus de Warnaffe have decided to set up a multi-resident practice together, still under the banner of «Notilius», maintaining a branch in Auderghem and a branch in Watermael-Boitsfort.

Relocation of the Watermael-Boitsfort branch

2026

In March 2026, the Watermael-Boitsfort branch will move to new, completely renovated offices on Avenue de Visé 5, between Place Keym and the Cimetière d'Ixelles.

This move enabled us to offer the same level of comfort and modernity to our clients and staff, whatever the branch, particularly in terms of digital technology and parking.

The Auderghem branch remains at Boulevard du Souverain 288 in Auderghem.

Rodolphe de Meeûs d’Argenteuil

2026

In August 2026, the notaries Alexis Cruysmans, Renaud Verstraete and Jérôme du Bus de Warnaffe welcomed a fourth notary, Rodolphe de Meeûs d’Argenteuil.

The arrival of a third notary means that we can continue to guarantee a continuous high-quality service and greater availability for all our clients. Their complementary skills are a real asset.

You will meet the three notaries when you sign your deed, but they will also make every effort to be available to you personally when your file is opened and throughout its processing.
